2015 Annual Presidents Report

Well it’s that time of the year again to let you all know what has and will take place within the OSS. Firstly, hopefully you all survived another long and cold Canadian winter our second in two years. Although these are hard on us Humans it is good for the water table and therefore for all the creatures that inhabit them. The Great lakes freeze almost solid across their surface area and this stops evaporation and keeps the levels of the systems up, which is good for everything that depends on them.

As of February 2015 the OSS is now Incorporated only took 30 plus years but we got there, so now the club has a constitution and Inc status.

Releasing Adult Steelhead
Adult Steelhead Transfer Ends 2016
We got some disturbing news recently from the MNRF that as of 2016 it will be the last year that the OSS and LHFC will be allowed to transfer adult Steelhead in both spring and fall as we have done for many years. The MNRF has decided to do a study for a number of years to see the effects of not transferring the adults, they will however still allow the OSS and LHFC to continue the raising and release of 50,000 yearlings into the Saugeen system. The MNRF however will stop raising the additional 35,000 yearlings at Chatsworth after this year.

Big thanks you again goes out the guys of the OSS and LHFC for another successful spring transfer of the adults to the upper Beatty and we hit the magic 1000 again so wish them a well and thank them for a hard week of work.

The smolts from Kincardine have all been released as of May 30 and the few remaining smolts at Port Elgin will be released June 4 so again a big thank you to the very dedicated guys of both clubs for getting this done also.

After 2016, the OSS will need to come up with other projects for our club to focus so lets hear from you our membership on ideas that you feel may be good for the Saugeen and it’s area.

The club still plans on expanding our Rod Jones pavilion and hope to have it done this year this will make for better Derbies and use as we all know the Derbies have been getting bigger and if the weather is bad there’s always some people getting wet so by expanding we’ll all benefit from it. Keep an eye on the website as we may need some bodies to help with the expansion.

Darryl Rodney and Karl Fisheries AwardSpeaking of Rod Jones it gives me great pleasure to advise you all the Rod will be receiving the National Recreational Fisheries Award from Ocean and Fisheries for all his dedication and commitment for many years to the Saugeen River and it’s surrounding area.

Rod received the award Friday May 8 so please, along with the Directors of the OSS and myself, wish him a great WAY TO GO Rod thank you. For those of you who may not know Rod here’s a little history Rod is one of the founding members of OSS and was instrumental in the building and taking care of the up welling boxes where our first Steelhead eggs were incubated to fry and then released into the Beatty back in 1977. After the boxes were discovered to not be the most successful Rod was the driving for to get things moving at the Mildmay Hatchery. When Mildmay was shut down Rod and some other key members of the OSS brokered a deal with the MNR and LHFC to start raising yearlings at the Kincardine hatchery were our yearlings are still raised. Rod also was the founder of the current Park on the bank of the Saugeen, as when he heard that the SVCA was going to close the site therefore lessening the access to the river he approached the SVCA and leased the property to keep this open for members and the public.

So closing on that note please feel free to contact myself or any Director of the OSS with any comments or questions.

Presidents Report Spring 2014

Well folks it’s that time of year again were I have to bring you all up to speed on the affairs of your Ontario Steelheaders. Where to begin lots has happened since we last talked.

The fall transfer went well but it cost me a case of beer to Mr. Choronzey as we had a side bet that we would or wouldn’t get our 500 adults transferred my side was that we would and his was that we wouldn’t as mother nature was closing in on us. He must have a hand on her pulse as the weather shut us down and we fell short by twenty some odd fish but hey the way I look at it some is better than none and Grant McAlpine and his crew did a great job as usual so I don’t mind losing to Mr. C. We also did a stocking of advanced fall fingerlings which is an added bonus as we’ve only done this once before in 2012 when the LHFC had another banner crop of little guys and so we had to lehttp://www.steelheaders.ca/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=paget some go early to make room in the hatchery.

Speaking of the weather are you all as tired of this winter as I am my back still aches when I see snow flakes. It certainly has been a brutal winter for snow and cold but it is Canada and we all will get through it. If your and ice fisherman or snowmobiler you sure had a awesome winter for it. The down side of all of this is if we get a quick thaw we could be facing some bad flooding in numerous places and this could delay our time spent this spring chasing our favorite fish.

The club has all it’s paper work in order for the spring transfer of adults and now we sit and wait for the weather to break, we have three transfer tankers now so as long as we have tow vehicles available we should this year finish in record time. We will again be doing the transfer of our yearlings from LHFC hatchery. The little guys were all clipped back in February so they are eating and growing waiting for their new home in Saugeen later this spring.

Clipping this year thanks to a big turn out of OS and LHFC members set a record number of little guys clipped in one day at just over twenty thousand great job guys well done.

The newsletter is later than usual for this we apologize but as the OS is a volunteer group life sometime gets in the way and things don’t go as planned. The group has had a number of personnel health and other issues so we are moving as best as we can and there will be a newsletter in a new and improved format. We are still working towards our Not For Profit status and also planning to have an AGM later this year, we will keep you informed as things progress so we ask for your patience and understanding.

The website as you all may or may not have seen looks and works great and is continuing to evolve for the better so visit it often and enjoy the labour of love from our web guy, Scott Kidwell. Thanks Scott, job well done.

Thirty five years ago the OS started with it’s upwelling boxes on the Beatty Saugeen and have been working on this system ever since. That is a long time and things have continued to move forward like the fixing of Walkerton the addition of the fishway at Maple hill and soon another at Maple hill, other projects are in the works but are still in the planning stages so stay tuned for these will be very exciting if all comes together.

Thank you to all the people and MNR staff who over the years gave of themselves to the improvement of our beloved Saugeen and continue to do so without these selfless individuals we wouldn’t be were we are today so keep up the hard work and thank you again.

Due to all this hard work our efforts this year came to the for front as the OS and LHFC jointly were recognized by the Canadian Fishing Hall of Fame as the Conservation Project of the Year a real feather in the hat of both organizations. The presentation took place at the Spring Boat and Fishing show with all the top people in the fishing world being present. Darryl Choronzey made a very heartfelt presentation to both groups of course with a few jabs during the presentation at his peers re various issues but we also have to thank him as we all know he’s worked just as hard to help the Saugeen get to were it is just like the OS and LHFC. Along with a beautiful plaque the group received a donation of One Thousand dollars of which the OS portion was donated to LHFC to assist in the cost of feeding our little guys. We hope to have the plaque on display in Steelheader Park at the bulletin board so come take a look.

Have a safe and great rest of 2014 and we’ll be in touch sometime later this fall but keep looking at the Website as things will be posted as they happen.

Best Regards,

President’s Report

Well folks it’s that time of year again were the OS is busy with a number of things. First we captured our adult’s at Denny’s Dam and moved them up stream to the prime spawning grounds of the Beatty headwaters of the Saugeen.

Next came egg taking for next year’s little guys and along with that will be the release of this year’s little guys who have by this time grown to some 6-10 inches and ready to take on the new world after spending almost a year being cared for by the guys at the LHFC and trust me they did as always, an excellent job.

There will be a release of about 60,000 from LHFC/OS and this year as an added bonus the MNR released approximately 35,000 more at the Beatty Saugeen these guys although slightly smaller than the LHFC guys due to colder water temp at the Chatsworth hatchery will no doubt only make the fishery that much stronger in the future.

Along with the MNR’s release at the Beatty there will some much needed follow up on the little guys in the Beatty later this year in the form of some Biomass work which will tell lots about how they are doing and the stream’s condition as well. We’ll keep you posted on that as the MNR’s Jody Schiefly made need some help with this.

Mother Nature was up to her old tricks and gave us a normal spring and so it took a little longer than usual to get the transfer done but the guys managed to as always get it done and transferred 962 adults to the prime spawning water of the Beatty Saugeen. A huge thank you goes out as always the volunteers that give their time and effort to get this done year after year and without this dedicated group the Saugeen would not be where it is today. The guys at the Dam also managed to take all the eggs needed by LHFC, OS and a couple of other groups and the MNR, all of these are going to the next generation of fish for next year.

Also this year at the request of Dave Gonder of the MNR and the Michigan DNR fish were wanded to check for implanted tags. If the fish was discovered to have a tag it was to be taken for study by the Michigan DNR as this would have been a Michigan fish which strayed over to our waters no fish were discovered to have tags.

The transfer of our little guys from the LHFC hatchery took place the weekend of April 26/13 and even though it was opening weekend of trout season the dedicated group got it done and all went smoothly. The little guys are now swimming around in their new home the Saugeen for a short time till they smolt out and migrate to Lake Huron were they’ll spend the next three years growing before they come back to their home the Saugeen. This year for the first time in many years the OS will take part in a Sportsmen Show. We will be at the Sportsmen in Walkerton Ontario the weekend of May31-Jun2 so if you haven’t got any plans make a trip to the show and stop by for a visit.

Also a first in the history of the OS we have a finalized constitution so a big thank you to the current BOD of the OS for getting this done.

Also very shortly the OS will have the revised Website up and running and there will be lots of new features for all you tech- types so stand by for this in the next couple of months.

The BOD is also looking into getting the Club incorporated for the future so we’ll keep you posted on how this is going.

So as you can see it’s been a busy time and looks to stay that way for quite some time to come, also keep in mind that there will be some upcoming elections in the near future so think about it as Member of the OS if it’s time to step up to the plate and take on a job to help lead the Club into the future.

Have a great summer, be safe and enjoy the great outdoors.

From the President

Well folks it’s that time of year for putting out another newsletter. Time has flown by and who’d believe it’s been two years since the current board of Directors were voted in. A lot has changed and the Board has really done an amazing job of getting the club back on its feet. Out of that work, we hastily drafted a constitution only to discover that it needs some fine tuning, so it is our next goal to complete that fine tuning in a timely manner.

The elections that were to take place this fall will have to be postponed. We hope this doesn’t discourage those of you who may have wanted to take the reins and contribute to the OS, but the board felt strongly and unanimously, that with a little more time, the transition will be much smoother for our successors once this constitution and many other projects are complete. So please, be patient and we will work even harder to get things in order so we aren’t handing the “new crew” a bunch of half-finished projects and unfinished business. Remember, just 2 short years ago, this organization was in peril and grave disorder. We’ve come a long way in 2 years, but for us folks with jobs and lives outside the Steelheaders, 2 years as it turns out; simply wasn’t enough time to sort our affairs properly. In the meantime, don’t be shy! The Directors need help, and it’s a great way to show genuine interest to the voting members for when the time comes… There’s lots of work to go around, so don’t be afraid to step up.

The current low water conditions are not helping our adult fall transfer efforts as we’ve only been able to move 47 adults to date. We still have time, and hope Mother Nature comes through with some much needed rain. The low water conditions are hurting us all over as there was no water coming through the fishway at Walkerton and nothing at Maple hill until mid-October. We’ve had reports that fish were trying to get through the breach in the Traux Dam in Walkerton but this is no easy task for them and most get blown back but they keep trying!

I’m happy to report that both the LHFC and MNR (Chatsworth) hatcheries are telling us that our little guys are doing well and LHFC has indicated that as soon as their Browns are planted the Rainbows will be moved to the larger tanks and then we’ll really start to see them take off …currently they are about 2-3 inches. The LHFC has recently had their election for a new BOD’s so on behalf of the OS BOD’s please welcome them and wish them all great success in their endeavors: Brian Garnet (President), Mike Hahn (VP),Mike Blumhagen (Treasurer),Dave Armstrong (Secretary), Harold Cowan (Director),Kyle Watson (Director), Robert Greason (Director), Carmen Gazel (Director), Norm Dobson (Director) and Todd Devries (Director)

Also, the OS wishes to send a well-deserved thank you, to Past President Al Wilkins for all his work over the last number of years not only with the OS’s current BOD’s but all those previously. Job well done Al! You should be extremely proud of what you helped create, and with continued cooperation between the OS, the LHFC and MNR it will continue for years to come.

This year, between what LHFC and the Chatsworth hatcheries are raising the OS should be able to plant almost 80,000 yearling Rainbow Trout in the spring of 2013. Keep in mind that this early-winter we’ll need volunteers again to clip our little guys; we will put out a quick reminder in Feb with dates and location.

As some of you may have noticed, there are some new signs along the banks of the Saugeen regarding poaching, over limits etc. The OS has put these as a reminder that there are limits and rules and everyone must abide by them. The MNR has shown that they are taking our request for a bigger presence seriously and tell us that this will be occurring more often. Please make sure that you carry your valid fishing license with you so that when you’re asked for it you have it with you. I’ve seen a number of cases when asked people said “oh it’s in my vehicle or trailer” and the CO would either walk with the person to where it is or wait for them to return and this only slows down the CO from making his tour of the river so to help them do their job keep your license on you when your fishing.

We recently lost another friend of the river with the passing of Jim (Mac) McIntyre. Jim was a lifelong friend of Rod Jones and Keith Berkeley who left us not that long ago, Mac and Keith both helped over the years with everything from the original egg boxes to adult transfers. Mac and Keith will be missed just like the other friends of the River who passed before them.

One other thing we would like to mention if you see garbage please take the time to pick it up and drop it in the bin on your way out. We recently had a Scout troop come in and do a great job of cleaning up not only the garbage along the banks but also the limbs and pieces of wood left after the SVCA came and cut some trees that had died and were presenting a potential safety hazard. So a big thank you goes out to 20th Faith Brant Scout Troop for a job well done you’ll see some pictures and an article in this newsletter.

In closing please keep in mind that if you have any suggestions, ideas or comments please feel free to come forward with any of these to any one of the BOD or myself and as mentioned before we will address it to the best of our ability.

Hats off to everyone involved in transforming this fishery. Our achievements are made possible by “Teamwork in Action”

Saugeen to Benefit From Research

Well it’s that time of the year again to let you know what’s new, and up-and-coming with the Ontario Steelheaders. It’s been a relativity quiet winter for most of us as Mother Nature didn’t allow us to get out on our usual hard water hot spots unless you ventured up to Nipissing or beyond. The Saugeen was good all winter for those brave souls who did get up here to give the winter Steelies a go. As most of you know we did our planting of the advanced fall fingerlings in November and they are all doing well in the Beatty Saugeen. Thanks to the group that helped out at the Port Elgin LHFC Hatchery over two weekends starting Oct 28-29 and finishing them the following weekend, 60,000 plus advanced fall fingerlings were clipped.

The weekend of Jan 28-29 a group of volunteers made up of Josh Choronzey, Tom Hamilton, Will Stewardson, Scott Redin, Travis Forester, myself and Anthony Zadwordi clipped 20,000 plus fish that by this spring, will be some very good sized yearlings. The LHFC took to the task of clipping the remainder and they got all of them done but 5,000 which Josh Choronzey, Dan Gravel, Scott Redin, Erica King and I finished off March 11/12. So a big thank you to the people who helped and also to LHFC for their assistance not only for the clipping but the fine job of raising these little guys destined for Saugeen later this spring. If you have never seen the LHFC Hatchery, go see it! It is a thing of beauty, and you can tell the guys from LHFC take great pride in their Hatchery and also in the great work they do there. We have to give them a big thank you for their assistance in getting the Saugeen’s steelhead runs where they today without it, it would have been an even tougher task than it has been; so thanks to Al Wilkins and his great group of guys at the LHFC. Just think, if the groups in the Georgian Bay area could work together like LHFC and the OS how much could be accomplished.

There are some very interesting things to tell you about that came out of a meeting called by the MNR and inviting the LHFC, Ontario Steelheaders, Sydenham Sportsman Assoc. and a few other clubs form the Georgian Bay area. Rod Jones, Josh Choronzey and I attended the meeting the weekend of Mar 3 /12 on our behalf. Rod and I got snow bound till 1:00am due to an actual snow storm. Good thing Rod and I have gotten older, cause if it was back in the day; Owen Sound may not have survived! The big take from the meeting is that MNR is going to put a lot of focus on the Saugeen River system for the next few years. They will be doing upgrades and repairs to Denny’s Dam staring in July of this year. They will be installing monitoring cameras not only Denny’s, but also at Walkerton, and two cameras at Maple Hill’s fishways for research purposes. Very soon there will be a live site available for you all to look at and see what’s going on as far as water temp and condition as well if any fish are moving at Denny’s. They are also going to do studies of smolt movement and spawning sites. They have a study on the go for the Dundalk Plateau which is the headwaters for a lot of rivers like our beloved Saugeen, the Bighead, the Grand and a number of others. The study is targeted at Wetlands degradation from the time of pre-settlement, and to see what damaging effects are being placed on the wetlands and what can be done to preserve them, as they are a very integral part of the watershed. They also informed the group that they will be doing a lampricide treatment of the Bighead and Nottawasaga river systems this year. We also had an opportunity to speak to Rich Henry and Hart Hill; the two CO’s for the Bruce Peninsula. We addressed our concerns about the issues that we are having on the Saugeen River and they have assured us that it will be addressed and they reviewed with us, the information they need when we call the MNR Hotline. They need vehicle license plate number, type and make of vehicle and a description of the individual or individuals. They have also indicated that they will be doing periodic enforcement campaigns on the river. You will see some new signage this year at various locations on the river regarding poaching, fish limits etc. Spring came very early this year and with that in mind our Fishery guy Darryl Choronzey made sure that we had permits from the MNR for March 1/12 so when the fish ran early, the Steelheaders were ready to move on transferring 1,000 adults to the Beatty Saugeen and Otter Creek. As you’ll see in this spring’s newsletter lots of cool stuff happening with the OS so go out and dig up some new members… the more the merrier and the stronger we become the more we can do! Keep in mind there will be Elections this fall for anyone who feels like getting involved at a higher level.

Good luck to all of you this season!

Yours in Fishing!

Outstanding Progress

Oct 1st, 2011 – Ontario Steelheaders President’s Address I trust everyone had a great and relaxing summer, and you are now looking forward to the beginning of another exciting fall steelhead season. I know it’s the beginning of autumn, as I just got back from my annual duck, grouse and walleye trip with my son Kevin and two of his buddies; Cameron and Matt. More ducks than grouse this year… too many leaves on the trees still to see the grouse, but as we all know, we can’t control old Mother Nature. I’m either getting older, the young guys are getting faster, or the trails are getting longer because I was really tired at the end of each day. Good thing I brought my liquid medicine (Forty Creek) to help with the tired bones. Well, where do I start? There are many things to bring to your attention, as it’s been a very, very busy first year for all of us. Late spring, Rod Jones, Darryl Choronzey and I were invited by the good folks at the Owen Sound MNR office, to the opening of the new and improved Walkerton fishway. It was an informal get together to thank all those involved in the improvements to the existing fishway. We got to meet the MNR’s, Shawn Carey and Jody Scheifley; the people primarily responsible for getting this done. And of course, our own Darryl Choronzey, who had a very large part to play as well. Others in attendance were the contractors who did the work to the fishway, other MNR personnel taking pictures, and a few LHFC directors. It was a great day, and despite it being very cold, Jody did a great job on the BBQ, even in the gale force winds. I left that meeting with a positive sense, that everyone was ready and willing to work together to make a real difference on the Saugeen, and that the improvements to this fishway was just the beginning. As some of you may or may not know, Hammond Power Solutions donated $1500 to the Ontario Steelheaders to be used for future conservation projects. A huge thank you to Bill Hammond! We thought it would be a great idea to show our appreciation of their most generous donation by presenting them with a granite plaque. Stefanie Bradley, head of Human Resources at Hammond Power Solutions in Guelph, graciously accepted the plaque on their behalf in June. Their contribution, combined with advertising revenue, corporate donations, fundraising activities and our operations at Denny’s Park all contribute to our financial commitments in fisheries enhancement, and meeting our objectives. On Sept 25, 2011, the Ontario Steelheaders Board of Directors held a meeting to discuss current and future business. On that day, our Constitution was unanimously adopted for immediate implementation. The Ontario Steelheaders now has a very comprehensive set of guide lines to build on for the future of this great organization. I’d like to take a moment to thank my fellow Directors for all their efforts in this first year of office. Thanks to Carlo Baldassarra, Dave Munro, Don Power, Madeline Walker, Al Frenette and Harold Curtis. A big kudos must also go out to Darryl Choronzey, LHFC, the MNR, and the Ontario Steelheaders volunteers for the amazing amount of work that was accomplished this year. Our long list of outstanding achievements, is something that as a member of the Ontario Steelheaders, you should all be very proud of. It is also why now, more than ever, it’s important that you renew your membership and get involved. The goals and objectives of this organization will not only benefit you as a member but all future members and the general public who share this very precious resource with us. This is also a very important time for all of us to rally the spirit of cooperation. Teamwork will make us stronger and better prepared to meet the challenges ahead of us. We can do far more as a group than we can as individuals, so let’s stay focused on working together, and in harmony, towards our goals. If you have any questions, ideas or comments please feel free to get in touch with any of the Directors of the OS or myself, and we’ll be glad to discuss them with you, and if we can’t give you an answer right away we’ll make sure that as a group, we try to get you one. In closing, I’m very proud of our outstanding progress this year. You’ll see in the pages of this newsletter that there’s lots of great news and interesting stories to read about. Most of all, I’m looking forward to the projects that lie ahead of us and the fun we’ll have doing it together! Yours in Fishing! Karl Redin President Ontario Steelheaders
