Spring 2019 Denny’s Damn Park Conditions

The park is open; some trailers have been brought in from storage, but it’s too muddy to move more at this time. Efforts will be made again this weekend to move more. The park was damaged by ice jams this spring and still very much a mess, be patient.

Resized_2 Picture taken 2 weeks ago; note the entrance to the park is in the upper right hand side of this picture

If visiting the park, please please, do not park or drive on the grass use only the gravel parking lot for all vehicular traffic as the park as a whole is very muddy.

The river is high and dirty with huge ice chunks on the banks of the river – both sides. Exercise extreme caution.

Ontario Steelheaders Updates & Notices

Good Evening Fellow Ontario Steelheaders,

This notification was sent to everyone on 12-09-18; through a blind cc email process to protect all members email addresses. Additionally, please note that all of the information is now being posted onto our website.

Please see the attached memos regarding the newsletter, as well as, the By-Law amendment to the constitution.

The memo regrading BOD position is being sent out advising that our current Derby Director, Kodey Buchanan is stepping down from this position at the end of this year. We would like to thank Kodey for all of his hard work and wish him well in his future endeavors. This has created an open position on the Board of Directors. We currently have asked Brian Zettler to step in on the interim basis and he has agreed and is also willing to accept the position on a full-time basis.

However, in keeping with our constitution, as this position is now available – we are notifying all members in good standing to inform them that if they so choose to want to take on this position, then to please advise me at contact@steelheaders.ca by the end of December 2018. If we have more than one person who is willing and capable of taking on this position then we will hold an election. Please note that the position is a commitment for a full term, which is 4 years and while extenuating circumstances may prevent a Director from fulfilling their commitment to this, we would appreciate in receiving feedback from potential candidates who believe that they can commit to the 4-year term.

I have attached a copy of the constitution, which provides an outline of a Director’s responsibilities for your review. Please note that the Ontario Steelheaders hosts a Spring and Fall Derby, in which you would be expected to organize, promote and run. Provide and prepare food for the event, as well as, solicit prizes for draws, sell raffle tickets and derby entrance tickets, as well as, clean up duties following the derby’s, etc. Additionally during the derby’s you are expected to speak publicly and make any announcements as required. You are also expected to attend regular BOD meetings. All monies obtained through the derby are to be handed over to the treasurer at the end of the day with a breakdown of any expenses incurred for reimbursement.

Please note that details regarding a possible election will be pending depending on outcome of response to this notification.

Thank You,

Madeline Walker

Spring Creek Update

Currently the largest coho run to date are on the spawning areas of Spring Creek, with many cohos caught in the lower Sauble River by anglers this fall. Spring Creek is the only steam in the area with a natural reproducing population of coho salmon.

The Hepworth Anglers Club (HAC) thank Trillium Mutual Insurance for their $2,000 contribution received from the ROOTS Community Fund, which will be used as part of their ongoing Spring Creek Restoration Project. These funds have been used to plant trees on both sides of Spring Creek acting as a buffer, protecting HAC’s restoration work completed in the lower section of Spring Creek.

Spring Creek hosts a large natural reproducing migratory fishery consisting of chinook/coho salmon, rainbow/brown trout, and also adds a significant volume of high quality cold water to the Sauble River, enhancing the water quality in the river and Lake Huron.

HAC’s Spring Creek stewardship/restoration efforts supported by our neighbours, community partners and individuals, will ensure that these public benefits continue into the future. The HAC also appreciated Trillium Mutual’ volunteer program, with their employee Steve Sherreff assisting with the bio mass studies conducted in Spring Creek. Bio mass studies are used to determine the success of the Hepworth Club’s restoration efforts.

Shown below is HAC secretary Rick Rusk presenting a cheque to Heather Barnes, recipient of the tree project. Heather has removed eleven acres from cultivation on both sides of Spring Creek, signing an agreement with Grey Bruce Alternating Land Use Services (ALUS) and plans to plant additional trees in 2019 assisted by the HAC and Trillium Mutual Insurance.

Best regards,
Bill
