MNR Could Halt Steelhead and Salmon Programs

Please read the notice we received from Mike Hahn from LHFC. We feel our members, partners and supporters should respond in full force. Your action is needed!

Good Afternoon,

The Ontario Government has made public consultation a part of any project that is deemed to “Environmental”. The work that the LHFC and most of her sister Club’s fall into that category with our Fish Stocking Program. Below is link that in a nutshell tells of the MNR’s plans to stock Natural fish into Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. In short, this means that Salmon, as well as Brown and Rainbow Trout will be eliminated from the stocking plan – as they are introduced and Naturalized species.

This is a mockery of common sense and if every member of our Club posted comments (found on the right hand side of the website link below) as to how both Angling Opportunity and Economic Benefits would be lost if the Clubs were no longer allowed to stock these species – something we have been doing for over 30 years – we may have a chance to overcome this completely unjust (and in my opinion idiotic) stocking plan.

The future of fishing these wonderful species is at risk here folks. It will only take a few minutes to comment, and it may in fact save a wonderful fishery. Click the link below. And please remember – we only have strength in numbers………

  1. Ma’am/Sir, my name is Derek Guay. I moved to Ontario from Quebec 25yrs ago. I grew up in some rual parts of Quebec. My dad mom, heck whole family fishes. As I grew up in Ontario and began to become my own person I faced many challenges and plenty of opportunity to take my life in many negative directions. Maybe for alittle while I was even headed in the wrong direction. Living in kitchener, I was now a city boy and aimless in my direction. Thankfully I had the opportunity to go salmon fishing with my family out at bronte harbour. I was 16yrs old and hooked. I remembered what I loved and found a piece of what I had lost so many yrs earlier. Fishing is my passion, especially Steelhead. These majestic animals captavate my imagination with there beauty and power. I commute once a week to lake ontario tribs, lake huron tribs and lake erie tribs to chase these beautiful fish. I would do it more, but I have a young family and must balance everything. To think that these beautiful fish may no longer receive my governments support threatening my and many other Fathers the opportunity to share this one day with our children IS heartbreaking. There are many people doing lots of work from grass root projects willing to roll their sleeves up and help. I ask you only do the same. There must be an economical impact that these species have and add as well to our culture here in Ontario. Please I urge you to reconsider or evaluate your options and consider the positive impacts that these fish have had on this once young boy and will have of many other generations to come. Respectfully, Mr. Derek Guay, Steeljunkies!

  2. this is crap they better not stop stocking rainbows and browns or they r gonna have alot of pissed off people

  3. Since Rainbow Trout have been introduced since the early 1900’s I feel they can be considered “native”. This information comes from government publications. Besides the economic impact, to say nothing of votes in up coming elections why in the world would would this action even be considered? Just ask other provinces about the economic impact of their fisheries affects the bottom line.

  4. Maybe we should start using horse and buggies again as well. Since we are going back to our old ways anyways.
